What the Numbers in Your Reading Actually Mean
Most people come to tarot through the imagery — the symbols on the cards, the suits, the figures.
But there’s another layer running beneath all of it: the numbers.
Every card in the tarot deck, except the Court Cards, carries a number. And those numbers aren’t just there for organisation. They’re part of the meaning. Once you start paying attention to them, your readings take on a whole new dimension.
Numbers and tarot — why they go together
Tarot and numerology have been linked for a long time, and for good reason. The numbers in the cards follow the same principles found in traditional numerology — each one representing a distinct energy, a stage in an ongoing cycle that moves from 1 to 9.
Think of it as a story that repeats. New beginning, growth, tension, resolution, and then back to the start again. Each number has its own place in that story, its own qualities — and both a light and a shadow side.
When a number shows up repeatedly across a spread, it’s worth paying attention. The reading is usually pointing you toward something specific.
How the numbers work across the deck
The Minor Arcana runs from Ace through 10 across all four suits — Cups, Wands, Swords, and Pentacles. The Aces carry the energy of 1: pure potential, a fresh start, the spark of something new.
The 10s are a slightly different case. In numerology, 10 reduces back to 1 (1 + 0 = 1), so a 10 in the Minor Arcana sits at the intersection of ending and beginning. A cycle has completed. Something new is being called in. These cards also often ask you to come to terms with something that may have been left unresolved.
The Major Arcana follows the same numerological thread, just on a bigger, more significant scale. Double-digit cards simply reduce to their single digit for the purpose of reading their numerical energy — so The World (21) carries the qualities of a 3, and The Tower (16) carries the qualities of a 7.
Justice (11) and The Fool (22) are technically master numbers in numerology, but for the purpose of tarot readings, they are usually reduced in the same way as the others.
What each number means
Here’s a guide to the core energy of each number. These meanings apply across the deck — in the Minor Arcana, in the Major Arcana, and whenever a number repeats in your spread.
1 — Beginnings
The number 1 carries the energy of inspiration and aspiration. It’s the moment when something is about to take shape — not yet fully formed, but on its way. There’s a strong sense of individual will here, of something being set in motion.
On its positive side, 1 brings creativity, originality, drive, and the courage to start something new. On its more challenging side, it can tip into willfulness or an inability to consider others.
When 1 appears repeatedly in a reading, a situation is just beginning — or you’re standing at the very edge of one.

2 — Patience
The number 2 is about balance and the art of waiting. Where 1 acts, 2 pauses and listens. It works through patience and gentle diplomacy rather than force, and its strength lies in its ability to hold two things in tension without rushing to resolve them.
Positively, 2 brings insight, receptivity, cooperation, and grace. Its shadow side is imbalance, impatience, or difficulty sitting with uncertainty.
When 2 appears repeatedly, a waiting period is often indicated — one where things are developing but not yet fully visible. A reunion, a reconciliation, or an unexpected turn may also be on the horizon.

3 — Expression
The number 3 is where things start to come alive. It takes the seed of 1 and the reflection of 2 and brings them into expression — through communication, creativity, and connection with others. It’s an outward, social energy.
At its best, 3 is joyful, communicative, and generous. When out of balance, it can scatter its energy — overreacting, overindulging, or avoiding deeper truths through noise and distraction.
When 3 appears repeatedly, group situations or dynamics involving more than one person are often at play. There may also be a delay involved, but with a genuine promise of something good on the other side.

4 — Manifestation
The number 4 is where ideas meet the ground. It’s the energy of foundation, structure, and practical application — the point at which what has been imagined starts to become real through effort and organisation.
Its strengths are reliability, focus, and the ability to build something solid. Its shadow is rigidity — getting so locked into routine or material concerns that growth stalls.
When 4 appears repeatedly, an idea is finding its form and starting to take root. The foundations are being laid.

5 — Change
The number 5 is restless by nature. It carries the energy of change, expansion, and re-creation — and it asks you to look at things from more than one angle, both the material and the deeper, less visible side of a situation.
At its best, 5 is curious, magnetic, and open to new possibilities. At its most difficult, it brings disruption, fear of change, or a tendency to chase experience without depth.
When 5 appears repeatedly, things are shifting — sometimes uncomfortably. There can be fluctuation, challenge, or unexpected turns. But there’s also the possibility of real growth if the change is met with openness rather than resistance.

6 — Adjustment
After the turbulence of 5, the number 6 brings things back into balance. It’s the energy of harmony, responsibility, and care — a number that takes in the full picture and works to bring opposing elements into alignment.
Positively, 6 is warm, compassionate, and deeply attuned to others. Its shadow is the tendency to become too fixed in opinion, or to take on responsibility for others in a way that becomes burdensome.
When 6 appears repeatedly, adjustments are underway — in thinking, in relationships, or in circumstances. There’s often a real capacity here to find a way through difficulty.

7 — Faith
The number 7 asks you to trust what you can’t yet see. It’s the energy of inner knowing, spiritual understanding, and the kind of wisdom that only comes through lived experience. The 7 doesn’t accept things at face value — it investigates, reflects, and seeks deeper truth.
Its strengths are discernment, faith, and a well-developed inner life. Its shadow is doubt, withdrawal, or a tendency to retreat into pessimism when answers don’t come quickly.
When 7 appears repeatedly, a period of introspection or solitude is often indicated. Unexpected gains may also be on their way — arriving from a direction you weren’t looking.

8 — Power
The number 8 is about power — not the kind imposed from outside, but the kind that rises from within and enables real accomplishment. It’s the energy of capability, strength, and following through on what you’ve set out to do.
At its best, 8 brings recognition, achievement, and the confidence to act from a place of genuine ability. Its shadow is the misuse of that power — overreach, emotional strain, or becoming too focused on status or control.
When 8 appears repeatedly, a positive shift is usually indicated — a change in mindset, in circumstances, or in standing. Even when some of the harder qualities of this number are present, the overall direction tends to be forward.

9 — Completion
The number 9 is the final stage of the cycle. It carries the energy of culmination — of arriving at the end of something that has run its full course. But within that ending, the seeds of what comes next are already present.
Its highest qualities are wisdom, selflessness, and a deep, impersonal kind of love — the ability to give without attachment. Its more difficult side involves personal loss, emotional extremes, or the pain of releasing something that still matters.
When 9 appears repeatedly, situations are drawing to a close, or have recently done so. A plateau is approaching — a moment of rest before the next cycle begins.

How to use this in a reading
You don’t need to analyse every number every time you lay out a spread.
But when a number repeats — particularly three or more times — it’s usually worth pausing and asking what that number is pointing to. Is the spread full of 5s? Change is either underway or on its way. A lot of 2s? You may be in a period of waiting. Several 9s? Something is completing.
The number doesn’t replace the card’s meaning — it sits alongside it, adding another layer to work with.
