Tarot vs Oracle Cards: What’s the Difference and How to Use Them Together

Tarot cards and oracle cards are often used in similar ways, but they are structured differently and serve slightly different purposes. Understanding how they work can help you decide how to use each system in your readings. (check out our learn tarot guide to start understanding tarot cards!)

Tarot follows a fixed structure. A standard tarot deck contains 78 cards divided into the Major Arcana and Minor Arcana, with suits that reflect different areas of life. Each card has a general meaning based on symbolism, patterns, and its place within the deck. Because of this structure, tarot is often used to explore situations in a more detailed and analytical way. It helps you look at context, relationships between cards, and how a situation is developing.

Oracle cards are more flexible. There is no standard number of cards or required structure. Each oracle deck is created around a specific theme, and the meanings are usually more open and direct. Because of this, oracle cards are often easier to approach, especially for beginners. They tend to focus on guidance, reflection, or a specific message rather than a detailed breakdown of a situation.

The difference is not about one being better than the other, but about how they are used. Tarot is structured and layered, while oracle cards are more intuitive and free-form. Many readers choose to use both together because they complement each other well.

One way to combine them is to start with tarot. Tarot can help you understand the situation, identify patterns, and explore different aspects of a question. After that, you can pull an oracle card to add a final layer of guidance or reflection. The oracle card can highlight a theme, suggest a perspective, or bring attention to something that may not have been immediately clear.

Another approach is to use oracle cards at the beginning of a reading. In this case, the oracle card sets the tone or overall message, and the tarot cards expand on it with more detail. This can be helpful if you want to frame the reading around a central idea before exploring it further.

You can also use oracle cards at the end of a reading as a closing message. After working through a tarot spread, an oracle card can provide a simple takeaway or a point of focus moving forward.

Using tarot and oracle cards together is ultimately about preference. Some people prefer the structure of tarot, while others are drawn to the simplicity of oracle cards. Combining both allows you to benefit from structure and flexibility at the same time.

There is no single correct way to use either system. The most important part is finding an approach that helps you read the cards with clarity and confidence.
